In this smocking technique, the gap between smocking stitches is increased every few rows, leading to a graded look. The technique serves two purposes - At points where the smocking is closer together, the fit is more snug and the fabric accentuates the wearer's body. Secondly, the texture created by this technique gives the illusion of the garment being pinched into a tip at one end while remaining completely comfortable.
